Potato market report week 46:

"Some market participants are very much focused on the consequences of the new Corona wave"

Even though demand is steady, retailers and food retailers continue to report a slow market. The market is supplied mainly through deliveries from all kinds of regions. The quality is not always satisfactory, and sorting costs are rising. Food retailers are advertising promotional products in bulk. Prices are essentially maintaining at last weeks' levels, according to Landwirtschaftskammer Rheinland-Pfalz.

Hesse: Price pressure due to quality deficiencies
Despite a low demand, potato prices have been going up somewhat. Meanwhile, there is price pressure from goods that must be marketed quickly due to quality defects. Sorting is on the increase. Nevertheless, premiums can be gotten for flawless lots. Export markets are signaling they are interested in buying, but at the current price levels, no business is being done, according to the State Office for Agriculture in Hesse.

Lower Saxony: demand could be met
According to the basis (grading 35 - 65, less than 8% defects, light- and firm-skinned goods, loose, free collection point per 100 kg), the following prices were paid last week:

Depending on the quality, surcharges or discounts are still possible. Please note the following market information: The demand could be met and market development was good, reports the Lower Saxony Farmers' Association.

Schleswig-Holstein: Sufficient goods on the market
As announced by the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Agriculture, the Corona situation is increasingly coming to a head again. Even if another lockdown seems to be unfeasible, some market participants are very much focused on the consequences of the new Corona wave. The sales opportunities for potatoes for the food service sector are the first to be discussed. On the local market, therefore, the higher prices of last week can not be maintained. According to the traders, cheaper lots can be bought. Overall, there are plenty of goods available on the market. The demand is estimated to be normal. This week, we are told of sortings in the range of 15 to 20 %. Furthermore, lots are being exported. However, price premiums cannot be generated in the export business.
