Cuna de Platero presented at Fruit Attraction a new blueberry variety it had developed

"Cupla is an early variety that has very good yields and very easy handling"

The Cuna de Platero cooperative presented at Fruit Attraction Cupla, a new blueberry variety that it developed and made available to all producers.

"Cupla is an early variety that has very good yields and very easy handling. Agronomically, it is very attractive and, commercially, it maintains an L size throughout the campaign and a flavor that is very reminiscent of wild blueberries,” stated Juan Carlos Garcia, the head of R+D+i at Cuna de Platero. "The sector is welcoming the variety with great interest, especially because of the earliness it offers and because it is available to any blueberry producer, with the corresponding exploitation contract."

Juan Carlos also said that the cooperative has had its own test fields for 15 years where it tests strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, and even pitaya. He also said that, in recent campaigns, the varieties of the blueberry segment have been evolving to early and late varieties. "The varieties so far have always been very seasonal. The important production has been in spring and early summer, and now we are looking for early and late varieties to start the season earlier and end it after summer. Commercially, the evolution has been very positive and the volumes are growing gradually, which allows us to offer products to the markets.”

"Strawberries are the most mature market in which we work, but raspberries and blueberries still have room for growth. Much of the success in the markets is due to the great work of the farmers of Cuna de Platero, who grow excellent quality fruit. Not all households consume berries nowadays. However, taking into account these fruits' nutritional values and consumption trends, we'll have new segments and new markets in the future.” Berries require extreme care when being transported to their destination in order to preserve their quality and properties, Juan Carlos stated. "This means that the new markets outside Europe are still pilot experiences, with short volumes."
