Alain Alarcón, Banagrumes:

“Consumers love sustainable exotic fruits!”

With the launch of the Orlana brand last year, Banagrumes reaffirmed its commitment to healthy and sustainable food. Today, more than 25% of the products offered by the wholesaler are distinguished by their quality and sustainability criteria. “With the creation of Bio’Select and Orlana, we wanted to position ourselves on the market as a multi-specialist in sustainable fruit,” explains Alain Alarcón, president of Banagrumes.

“More than 25% of our offer is now sustainable”
Banagrumes calls a fruit sustainable if it is the result of producers adhering to sustainable production systems like organic agriculture, reasoned agriculture, or Appellations of Origin, Protected Geographical Indications, Red Label, Fair Trade or Zero Pesticide Residue. “In order to produce a sustainable fruit, one must also pay attention to the natural resources necessary for its growth, care for the human chain used to produce and distribute the fruit, and be committed to the fight against food waste. Particular attention is paid to the packaging used. That is why most of our suppliers are certified Global Gap and committed to citizenship/eco-responsible approaches. Today, our sustainable offer corresponds to more than 25% of our volumes.”

A particularly successful mango season
The wholesaler is about to end its sales of Orlana mangoes from Spain. The season was particularly successful. “It is the second season we are concluding for the Orlana mangoes. It really went very well. This zero-pesticide-residue mango has clearly found its place on the market. Sales were fluid with good prices. Sustainable exotic fruits are very popular among consumers because they are not transported by plane and come from Europe, so they are better perceived. We’ve had some very good feedback from our clients. Three weeks ago, we transitioned to the yellow lemons from Spain, which we also offer under the Orlana brand, without pesticide residue. Little by little, our offer is growing.”
