In the Netherlands, 17 growers have founded their own cooperative - Tolpoort Vegetables. These growers have production locations in the Netherlands and Spain. The cooperative will focus on cauliflower, broccoli, and chicory sales. "We began setting up the organization in July and August," says Gerard Korse. "So, it's all gone quickly. We want to expand the sales team even more. But we have a good back office in place. And we're already getting the first orders."
The affiliated growers have these full-soil vegetables available year-round. "In terms of cauliflower and chicory acreage, we're the market leader in the Netherlands. We have just under 2,000 hectares at our disposal there and in Spain." The organization works closely with Tolpoort for distribution and packaging. They work from this company's premises in the Netherlands.
Gerard is not excluding expanding to other full-soil vegetables. "But we first want to get our main products' sales well on track. The good thing is we can get steadily going this year. With cauliflower and broccoli, we're now gradually switching to supply from one of our growers in Spain. We're starting to sell these Spanish products through our cooperative. On January 1, chicory will follow. After that, the Dutch cauliflower and broccoli season will restart in the spring," he concludes.
