Sweet potato production is developing in France

Originally from South America, the cultivation of sweet potatoes is developing in France. 40% of the sweet potatoes consumed in France are grown on French territory, and the rest comes from Spain or the United States. The product used to be sold in the exotic fruit section, but is now found everywhere.

Xavier Dupuis, from the Garennes farm in Les Mureaux (Yvelines), started growing organic sweet potatoes last year. On his farm of 111 hectares, the producer grows his sweet potatoes on a plot of 2,000 m² and is hoping to harvest between 2 and 3 tons. “It is a product that will complement my existing range and it is a product that is gaining in popularity. The French production started in the south of France, but with global warming, the crop is moving up to the north of the country.”

Although the product has been democratized, its price at 4.90 €/kg [5.61 USD/kg] remains higher than the price of potatoes. “Potatoes can be harvested using a machine on several hectares and it is a culture we master completely. But we don’t produce a lot of sweet potatoes and we often have failures, so we are forced to sell it at a higher price,” explains Simon Kiéné, from the La Haye farm in Les Mureaux.
