Panamanian banana exports will grow around 7% at the end of 2021

For this year 2021, exports are expected to end close to 21 million boxes of bananas of 18.14 Kg each, which would represent a 7% increase approximate compared to last year, according to the National Director of Bananas of the Ministry of Agricultural Development (Mida), José De La Lastra.

Good administration, adaptation to changes, good labor-management relations and increases in planting hectares have contributed to the increase in productions in the last three years.

De La Lastra highlighted that there are approximately 8,000 hectares of bananas planted in the country, which generates around 8,000 direct jobs and some 25,000 indirect jobs, leaving more than $ 200 million in the country’s economy.

Among the main destinations for banana exports in 2021 are: Holland, United States, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Italy and China.

The official clarified that Panama does not import bananas from any country and the one that is sold in the different stores is of the highest quality and is proudly produced in Panama.
