In the last ten campaigns, the province of Almeria has decreased its tomato exports by 112.52 million kilos, going from exporting 510.77 million kilos in the 2011/2012 campaign to 398.25 million in the 2020/2021 campaign. This amount coincides, precisely, with the increase in tomato sales from Morocco to the Member States of the European Union in the same period, including Spain, which went from 329.01 million kilos in 2011/12 campaign to 441.34 million kilos in the 2020/2021 campaign.
This, according to data prepared by Hortoinfo from the Estacom statistical service (Icex-Tax Agency). Despite this decline, the province of Almeria continues to be the one that exports the most tomato, accounting for 58.3% of the Spanish total and 365.19% more than Murcia, the country's second-biggest tomato exporting province.
Between September 1, 2020, and August 31, 2021, Almeria exported 398.25 million kilos of tomatoes, the lowest figure obtained in the last ten campaigns, for a value of 521.64 million euro and an average price of € 1.31/kg.
It was followed by Murcia, which exported 85.61 million kilos (12.53% of the Spanish total) for 96.16 million euro, at an average price of 1.12 €/kg.
The province of Granada was the country's third-largest tomato exporter with a volume of 66.66 million kilos worth 141.65 million euro, and an average price of € 2.12/kg.
The province of Valencia ranked fourth after exporting with 30.75 million kilos of tomatoes this season for 72.91 million euro and an average price of € 2.37/kg.
Barcelona ranked fifth with 29.85 million kilos of tomato exported for a value of 26.44 million euro and an average price of € 0.89/kg.
Other traditional tomato-exporting provinces are Alicante, which shipped 23.66 million kilos for 32.29 million euro and an average price of € 1.36/ kg, and Las Palmas, which exported 23.32 million kilos for 17.53 million euro at an average price of € 0.75/kg.
