The 'Senlin avocado' is low in sugar and high in nutritional value. These characteristics have made it very popular with Chinese consumers in the last few years. However, the domestic market still primarily relies on imported avocados. Data from the General Administration Customs China (GACC) shows that China imported around 6,581 tons of avocados in the first quarter of 2021. That is an increase of 13.35% compared to the same period in the previous year.
The huge potential of the avocado market in China has drawn the attention of many investors across the globe. In 2018, the government of Pu'er prefecture in Yunnan designated the avocado as the most likely product to revitalize the rural economy in Pu'er. And now the Pu'er avocado is the first national avocado brand to have received national recognition as an exemplary regional product. The Pu'er avocado brand is the only stable supplier of high-quality domestic avocados in the Chinese market. This year JD.com assisted Pu'er avocados with product control, distribution, and marketing. Pu'er avocados now sell well in markets throughout China.
Avocados have high requirements from the natural environment. The avocados only grow swiftly in areas where the dry and wet seasons are clearly distinguished, and where the wet season has high temperatures. After years of experiments, Yunnan was recognized as the most suitable place in China for the production of high-quality avocados on an industrial scale. And now, the standardized avocado farms in Pu'er alone already cover an overall surface area of 4,000 hectares. That is the largest avocado production area in the country. And by 2025, the overall surface area devoted to avocado plantation in Pu'er is expected to reach 6,667 hectares.
Chinese consumers were quite familiar with imported avocados from the very beginning, but these are expensive. Pu'er avocados do not have fiber impurities, or black strands, and the flavor is fuller than most imported avocados. The Pu'er avocados have the potential to replace import avocados on the Chinese market. And the Chinese market has huge potential. JD.com, an e-commerce platform with a strong distribution and marketing system, came to the aid of Pu'er avocados. JD.com and Pu'er avocados took advantage of the absence of strong domestic avocado brands in the Chinese market to gain a foothold.
On Pu'er organized the first 'avocado festival' on the 25th of October this year to market the Pu'er avocado and strengthen the brand name. A live broadcast on the JD platform attracted close to 400,000 viewers. And in October alone, the sales figures of Pu'er avocados on JD.com increased by 4,767.89%. JD.com arranged for online and offline promotional activities that helped improve Pu'er avocado sales figures as well as brand recognition throughout China.
