Potato market report week 44:

“Harvest nearly done, prices stable”

The demand reflects the season, according to the Rhineland-Palatinate Chamber of Agriculture. Storage campaigns were not quite as successful as hoped. The harvest is practically complete. Goods from the fields are still being delivered throughout the region. Warehouses are being accessed. Table potatoes are achieving a storage premium of €4/dt. Quality-related sorting is increasing somewhat. Storage potential is viewed with skepticism here and there. Consumer prices are still stable to date.

Hesse: Stable price levels
A quiet to normal demand and an extensive supply are determining the current potato market, according to the State Office for Agriculture in Hesse. In the short term, hardly any significant changes are expected. The stable price levels might continue. Nevertheless, individual lots from provisional warehouses are pushing for rapid marketing and are being sold with concessions. Small mark-ups can be achieved for stocked goods. In packing plants, stock is increasingly being used. Sales promotions have so far failed to stimulate sales.

Lower Saxony: storage surcharge of €4.
According to the basis (grading 35 - 65, less than 8% defects, light- and firm-skinned goods, loose, free entry per 100 kg), the following prices were paid last week, wrote the Lower Saxony Farmers' Association:

Depending on the quality, surcharges or discounts are still possible. Please note the following market information: A storage surcharge of €4 could be paid.

Schleswig-Holstein: Prices might rise soon
According to the report of the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Agriculture, there is little change in the potato market. Due to the weather, potatoes are still harvested here and there. However, only a few lots are still outstanding. As sales are slow, supply is meeting the demand. Prices might rise in the coming days. Stock mark-ups in other states are giving rise to the hope that -in this state as well- mark-ups of €3- 4 are possible. On the other hand, there are quality-related markdowns as well. Deductions of 20-25% are reported. Much wireworm infestation and problems with Rhizoctonia are reported. However, storage problems are not present on a large scale at present. Export activity has continued.
