Packaging under a magnifying glass - news and events

On October 21, Lorentzen & Sievers (L&S) hosted a trade exchange in Hamburg. Fruit importers, marketers, producers, food retailers and packaging (machine) manufacturers learned about paper-based packaging. For more than an hour each, technologists and scientists from Mayr Melnhof, DS Smith, Fraunhofer and the Papiertechnische Stiftung provided deep, practical as well as scientific insights from production to recycling. The use of plant residues, for example grass paper, was discussed particularly intensively. For the scientists predominantly a "can do", for the board manufacturers for the most part a "red rag". Especially in recycling, the contamination of the process water leads to massive disruptions.

Those who are interested in the topic can obtain relevant information from L&S afterwards, or enter the discussions at the European Packaging Forum. As a cooperation partner, L&S will be present in person and with a booth together with its PET tray partner INFIA. The next expert exchange on the topic of "Circular Economy 2022" will take place again in Hamburg on November 03, 2022. Pre-registrations are already being accepted informally by L&S.

Brand new and currently successfully implemented, L&S has a paper flow pack for organic carrots: recyclable paper, free of fossil raw materials. A special wet strength agent ensures that the paper will resist product and condensation moisture. Visibility of the product is provided by a wood fiber-based cellulose film. Special coatings to ensure proper sealability on horizontal and vertical flow pack equipment and water-based inks ensure an all-around sustainable product. The exchange of gas and moisture through the paper creates a positive microclimate in the packaging, which has a beneficial effect on the shelf life of the fruit.

The 2nd European Packaging Forum will also focus on paper and film-based packaging, recycling, circular economy and sustainability in the broadest sense. As cooperation partners, INFIA and L&S will be available to answer questions between presentations and during the panel discussion.

"The level of knowledge in the industry is very high now, but the complexity is permanently increasing," says Claudia Schuh of L&S on the current situation. "Just to really understand the changes to the Packaging Act announced for next year and the current version of the minimum standard for measuring recyclability, and to recognize and implement the opportunities that arise from them, presents us with major challenges. But we see the movement in this and are pleased that the requirements of the market are being recognized and implemented bit by bit. Sustainability means not only meeting the environmental requirements, but also meeting the economic ones."
