Amazon to pay billions to prevent Christmas shortages
Amazon has said it will spend several billion dollars to manage labour shortages and supply chain issues in the run-up to Christmas. The online retail giant said it was doing "whatever it takes to minimise the impact" on customers and sellers. While the technology giant said 4th-quarter sales rose 29% to $83.4bln, they fell short of expectations. Profit rose to $20.5bln from $12.6bln.

US: Sprouts debuts urban format in Florida
For its 25th location in the Sunshine State, Sprouts Farmers Market went urban. One of the fastest-growing grocery retailers in the country opened its latest store in Tampa Heights, Florida, on October 27. The 24,000-square-foot store at 101 North 7th Avenue features a new layout for the retailer, with fresh produce still at the center of the store but with new stations for baked goods, a streamlined bulk foods department and an expanded plant-based assortment.

Mexico's Femsa posts wider profit in this year's 3rd quarter
Mexican conglomerate Femsa reported a 3rd-quarter net profit of 14.1bln pesos ($683.8mln), up from a profit of 3.2bln during the same quarter last year. Total revenue for the Monterrey-based bottler and retailer, which also operates the vast Oxxo convenience store chain, as well as pharmacies and gas stations, rose 12.6% to 142.4bln pesos, up from 126.5bln during the same period last year.

US: Instacart expands delivery footprint with Dollar Tree deal
Instacart and Dollar Tree have expanded their partnership to offer same-day delivery in as fast as 1 hour from nearly 7,000 of the latter’s US stores. This means that Instacart now partners with more than 700 national, regional and local retailers, to deliver from more than 65,000 stores.

Sweden: ICA reports 2.2% increase in consolidated net sales in 3rd quarter
ICA has reported a 2.2% increase in consolidated net sales in the 3rd quarter of its financial year, to SEK32.1bln (€3.22bln), with the group seeing an increase in operating profit and margin during the period. Operating profit increased to SEK1.82bln (up from SEK1.7bln for the same period last year).

Spain’s first all-electric reefer
Spanish supermarket Alimerka is using the 1st fully-electric refrigerated truck in Spain. The new electric MAN rigid with its Frigoblock inverter-driven fridge and will save Alimerka 60 tonnes of CO2 a year compared to a traditional diesel-fuelled vehicle with an annual mileage of 60,000km. The low noise also allows deliveries outside of peak hours and at night.

Russia: Magnit boosted by Dixy acquisition, sees revenue up 27.7% in Q3
Retailer Magnit has reported a 27.7% increase in revenue in the 3rd quarter of its financial year, boosted by its recent acquisition of the Dixy chain. Total revenue came in at RUB489.3bln (€5.97bln) for the period, while net retail sales reached RUB475.5bln (€5.81bln), a 28.2% increase.

Retail sales in Korea jump 8.2% on yr in September on ‘revenge shopping’
Retail sales in South Korea jumped last month on pent-up spending in line with progress in vaccination rate. According to the data released by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the country’s retail sales totaled 13.2tln won ($11.3bln) in September, up 8.2% from the same month a year earlier. Online sales surged 14.5%, while offline sales expanded at a slower pace of 3.3% with brick-and-mortar stores showing mixed performances.
