For the Kärcher company from Mutterstadt, the season is gradually coming to an end. As Carli Zöller tells us, the demand for bunching onions continues. At the same time, he says, demand for radishes is dropping. "We daily deliver nationwide, to cities such as Berlin, Chemnitz, Dresden, Leipzig, Stuttgart and Munich," says Zöller. Customers include various wholesale markets and food retailers.
The rainy weather has long since passed and the products affected by it have grown back. "However, the storm in week 42 presented us with some new problems. The otherwise young, upright bunching onions fell over in the process. When these are on the ground, you can't harvest them. However, the other products have recovered from the rainy weather. The majority of our range comes from outdoor production," says Zöller.
He said the bunching onions, which the company sources from regional, seasonal outdoor production, are particularly popular. "At the moment, we can offer between 200-400 pallets of bunched onions per week. But that will change abruptly from mid-week week 44 because the season will soon be over. From week 44, the market will focus on bunch onions from North Africa," Zöller indicates. "The bunching onions are in our assortment from mid-March to November."
According to Zöller, the quality of bunching onions is rather moderate due to the weather and season: "In summer, they are naturally more beautiful, larger and bolt upright. Nevertheless, demand is significantly higher than for other products.
Radishes: good quality, low demand
"The quality of radishes is good, but demand has been rather low. Demand from the catering industry has returned to normal after this branch was closed for a long time. In general, the demand for German products is quite high at the moment, because other production areas can no longer produce much due to the weather, read: the cold."
