Market Report Austria, Week 43:

'Well-stocked potato storages'

The situation on the Austrian table potato market is showing little change. The harvest has now been completed in all provinces. Traders' warehouses are well-stocked, although potatoes continue to be delivered. However, there is no pressure on supply. Quality problems also remain as numerous as ever, which is likely to lead to correspondingly high rejections of stored food products. As is often the case at this time of year, sales at retailers are manageable. On the one hand, consumers on the domestic market still seem to be quite well stocked with goods. On the other hand, the traditional importing countries still have little demand or are supplied with low-priced goods from European competitors.

There has been no change in producer prices. At the beginning of the week, potatoes for human consumption in Lower Austria were mostly sold at 18,- to 20,- Euro/100 kg, with some buyers deducting discounts for the high logistics and sorting costs. In Upper Austria, prices remained unchanged at up to 25,- Euro/100 kg.

Balanced onion market
The Austrian onion market continues to be well-balanced. A sufficient supply is met by a seasonally calm but steady domestic demand. With the turn of the month and autumn temperatures, domestic consumption is likely to pick up further. Exports can also be made on an unchanged ongoing basis. There is no change in producer prices from the previous week. For onions, cleaned and sorted in the box, mostly 16,- to 19,- Euro/100 kg were mentioned at the beginning of the week, depending on quality and size.

Satisfactory quality for carrots
The Lower Austrian carrot market continues to be stable. At present, harvesting work for storage is in progress. Regionally, conditions are somewhat too dry. The quality of the harvested carrots is quite satisfactory so far. The balanced market situation has not changed and there is no change in producer prices for the time being. At the beginning of the week, mostly 40,- to 45,- Euro/100 kg were paid for carrots in 5kg bags, from the ramp, depending on the quality.
