The banana export sector hopes authorities will set the price of a box of bananas for 2022 soon and assured the public that it does not want to enter into controversies with banana producers, who insist that they were deceived into signing an agreement so that the price of a box in 2022 continues having the current price of $ 6.25.
Richard Salazar, a representative of the Banana Marketing and Export Association (Acorbanec), said the producers' position was surprising and added that the sector expected the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Pedro Álava, would set the price that was agreed on their meeting.
"We do not want to enter into controversies about what the group of producers is saying. It's been a bit surprising, but we are not going to argue if there was or there wasn't an agreement. There is a document that is backed by the Ministry of Agriculture and we have no reason to doubt the Ministry. Despite all of this, the meeting already took place and by law, the minister has seven days, from that meeting, to set the price of the box of bananas,” stated Salazar, who pointed out that exporters need to sign contracts with international markets.
When consulted by the newspaper El Universo about the position of the producer sector, Juan Jose Hidalgo, the executive director of the Association of Banana Exporters of Ecuador (AEBE), said: “We support what the minister stated. The agreement must be respected.”
