Egyptian pumpkin producer increased acreage by over 130 hectares over recent years

“The demand for pumpkins is increasing day by day”

In just two months the Egyptian Hokkaido pumpkins will arrive on the European market. One exporter states they’ve increased their acreage by more than 130 hectares, with the farm using renewable energy to both save on costs as well as be an interesting trading partner for importers.

Wael Soliman, export manager for Egyptian produce exporter Oriental Fruits, states they’re in full preparations for the upcoming pumpkin season. “Our Egyptian organic farm’s Hokkaido pumpkins will arrive by early January 2022 to all European customers and the season should last up until May. We’ve combined our farming legacy with market needs and expect export volumes to reach about 2000 tons this year. The demand for pumpkins is increasing day by day, due to nutritional value and health benefits, and there has been an increasing amount of interest into a healthy lifestyle among consumers, ever since Covid-19 started spreading.”

Oriental Fruits decided to focus on renewable energy on their Hokkaido pumpkin farm, Siloman explains. “One of our main and most successful core crops is the Hokkaido pumpkin. Using renewable energy won’t just save money it will make our products much better positioned with our trading partners. This will allow us, as producers, to present a premium to environmentally concerned consumers. Aside from trimming down that electric bill, solar power allows farm lands to be much more eco-friendly.”

The exporter has its eyes set on the European countries, where Soliman claims they’ve been able to become a dominating player after increasing production: “Our cultivation of pumpkins was extended by more than 130 hectares, especially between Luxor, Aswan and Alex-Cairo dessert road in recent years. The importance and the quality of our Hokkaido pumpkins is confirmed by the export results. We became one of the dominating companies in Europe. Our market share is becoming widely to Dutch market, Scandinavia, Germany, France, and Great Britain. In terms of price, Egyptian commercial goods are generally traded at satisfactory prices, similar to the German organic pumpkins of the previous season.”
