Diablotina, a nectarine with red pulp, was one of the novelties presented at the IRTA Fruit Week

Diablotina, a nectarine with red pulp, was been one of the novelties in fruit varieties that were presented at the IRTA Fruit Week, an event held by the Institute for Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA) at the Mollerussa facilities from October 20 to 22.

IRTA has been experimenting with different varieties on its Gimenells farm for several years and this new nectarine, which has enormous antioxidant potential and a great sour point, has been highly valued in a first tasting that was carried out with different consumers, stated Gemma Reig, a research technician of the department of Fruit growing. The researchers also tested it to make other products, such as jams or juices, achieving very positive results.

The first day of the event was devoted to peaches and nectarines and included a presentation by George Manganaris, from the Cyprus University of Technology, on the cultivation of peaches in Greece. In the afternoon, there was a field demonstration on inking in peach trees. Fruit Week continued on Friday with a day devoted to apples and pears.
