Great satisfaction for seedless grape varieties and great expectations for persimmons

OP siciliana Ecofarm ended the peach and nectarine campaign on October 13th, but is ready to start with the fall season.

Rocco Patrì

"We are reviewing our management models so as to make each single process more efficient. As for production, we are rather pleased with it," reported OP president Rocco Patrì .

Harvesting of table grapes coming to an end, growing expectations for persimmons
"When it comes to table grapes, the Italia variety boasts excellent quality and has fully pleased our partners in northern Italy and Europe, especially in France. In order to meet the needs of the Nordic countries, we have also started producing the Crimson seedless variety. We are in fact convinced that the future of European grape cultivation is increasingly oriented towards seedless varieties."

Crimson is a medium-late red-purplish table grape variety available until late fall and boasting unique organoleptic qualities and appearance. The thicker skin means it has an excellent shelf-life. Grapes have an oblong shape, deep color, firm and crunchy flesh and an excellent flavor.

"Many of our contacts who operate in the various Italian markets are confirming the increasing popularity of seedless red grapes. This means consumers are starting to recognize and appreciate Crimson grapes and we are ready to seize this opportunity. The campaign is ending with a production price of €0.80/kg, but there are little quantities left."

Persimmon season looking good
The Ecofarm PO has been successfully commercializing persimmons for the past six years, which has enabled it to widen its product range. Fruits are available from mid-October to late January.

"We will start with persimmons next week. Over the years, we have developed agronomic techniques that have enabled us to obtain standard grades that can compete with the Spanish ones. What has led to this improvement was the fact that grades below the minimum standard do not sell despite their good flavor, while the average production price for standard grades was approximately €0.60/kg during the past season."

"This year, in particular, the temperature fluctuations have produced fruits with an excellent color and we are expecting them to have a high Brix level. We are certain they will be popular, with good returns. With our 30 hectares, we will be able to meet demands, though of course we will have to wait a few days to set the quotations."
