“We’ve seen an increase in volumes for grapefruit and lemons”

There are more volumes for both grapefruits and lemons, says one Polish fresh produce trader. Sizes for Star Ruby grapefruits aren’t the largest, but the upcoming Rio Red grapefruits should fill the gap for larger sizes when the season starts next week.

The Polish fresh produce trader Fresh Point is in the midst of their citrus seasons. The produce is grown in Turkey, then shipped to Poland where they’ll find new destinations across Europe. According to Yuksel Zengin, managing director for the company there will be larger sized grapefruits available starting next week: “Right now, at Fresh Points we’re in the middle of the grapefruit season, specifically the Star Ruby variety. We’ve noticed that sizes for Star Ruby grapefruits are medium to small this year. In terms of volumes we have seen an increase compared to last season. Next week we expect to start with the Rio Red grapefruits, which will have much larger calibers available.”

Next to grapefruits the Polish trader is simultaneously dealing with the lemon season. Trade is slow at the moment, but Zengin expects this to increase soon. “We also do lemons at the moment. However, demand for lemons is still rather low. We expect demand to pick up from the beginning of November, which means we’ll start loading larger volumes from that point. Which is great, as we’ll have more lemons in stock than we did last year.”

“On top of the citrus seasons, we’ve just started with cucumbers as well. The season is looking good, as the quality is on par and the demand is solid. For all of our produce, we work with supermarket chains mainly. The European market is always the most important one for us, this year should be no different.” Zengin concludes.
