The problem is not only cultivating, but having the right channels to place the produce. La Grande Bellezza Italiana (LGBI) seems to have solved both issues. "Within the next couple of years, we will have around one hundred hectares of pomegranates producing approximately 400 tons. But what counts the most is having the right outlet. It would be silly planting trees without knowing where to sell the produce. At LGBI, we plan and carry out commercial agreements first, then we increase our productivity," explained Leonardo Odorizzi.
Harvesting started a few days ago and will continue until early December. Commercialization will instead continue until February. Each fruit bears the La Grande Bellezza Italiana mark that guarantees the entire chain.
"Thanks to our business network, we meet most needs of the big retail chain with ongoing high-quality supplies. As we plan the campaigns at the start of the year, we establish prices that will not fluctuate - neither when there is strong demand and quotations soar, nor when the situation is stalling and prices drop. This solution works well for both buyers and sellers."
Pomegranate producers part of LGBI are located in Apulia, in the Taranto province. Crop techniques include mulching and mowing, so no herbicides are needed. What is more, integrated pest control reduces the use of synthetic products to a minimum and harvesting is carried out at the right time to reach the right ripening level.
