The last quarter always causes a stir at Tovano in the Netherlands. "We have some nice new arrivals," says Richard Strijbis.
"Our Turkish shipper, Ephesus, has sent the first figs of the new harvest. I was somewhat skeptical before the season started. The harvest had been disappointing and, so prices are quite high. But we're having to carefully hand out the first loads. True connoisseurs appreciate these beautiful dried figs. They're practically lining up for these first quantities."
This dried fruit and nut wholesaler's fresh Iranian dates are a crowd pleaser too. "These are especially popular with specialist fruit and vegetable store clients. Each type of date has a different buyer. These dates are very fresh. So they're a completely different product than Medjoul dates. That's in terms of size, flavor, and bite. Their freshness, in particular, is what makes us distinctive," says Richard.
Last but not least, Tovano also offers French walnuts. These come in crates and 500g packs. "Most of our walnuts come from the United States and Chile, of course. That's where the volumes are. But last year, we added these French walnuts just for fun."
"And buyers, especially market vendors, returned for them. That's the nice part of our exclusive package. But we deliberately keep the season short. That's because when the new Diamond walnuts supply arrives from the U.S., our focus will lie there," Richard concludes.
