Asturian kiwifruit harvest delayed due to spring frosts

This season, the kiwifruit harvest is expected to be "slightly" delayed in the Asturian region of Bajo Nalón due to the weather conditions recorded in recent months. "We have had some unusual weather; quite humid, with high temperatures and some frosts. This has had an impact on the sugar levels in kiwifruit and also affected harvesting times," says Ángel Cuesta, of the Pravian company Actimilla del Narcea.

Ignacio Cavanilles, chief engineer of the Kiwinatur plantation, agrees with these forecasts. "It is likely that there will be a slight delay, but it is still early to make estimates. In any case, the second half of November will be the key period," he says. "The spring frosts, especially those in April, did a lot of damage to the fruit and affected its cycle, but in spite of everything, we expect the production to increase slightly in terms of volume."

Organic kiwifruit
Kiwinatur is one of the companies in the sector that has made the greatest commitment to innovation over the past year. A key factor in this process has been the acquisition of a 30-hectare orchard in the town of Riberas, in Soto del Barco. The company wanted to expand its organic kiwifruit production, adding also plantations of Nashi pears, an Asian variety. "Everything will be ready for next year's campaign. At this time, all these plantations are being converted to organic," says the agronomist.
