Edwin Janssen, BUD Holland:

"More Peruvian specialties being imported in the wake of better-known exotics'

"We've been importing the more popular exotics from Peru for 20 years. These include vegetables and white and green asparagus. But also black figs, flown-in mangos, and Barhi dates. We know that country well and have connections there," explains Edwin Janssen of BUD Holland.

"Thanks to that, we began weekly imports of many Peruvian specialties. That was ten years ago. We bring these to the Netherlands for re-export. We send these to many European countries, from Scandanavia to all the Mediterranean countries."

"For example, we import peppers, like Aji Amarillo, Rocoto, and Aji Limo from Peru every week. As well as dried Aji Mirasol and Panca. We also have a weekly supply of Oca and Mashua potato varieties. Unfortunately, we haven't been allowed to import since December 2020. We import black Morado and white Choclo corn too. And Banana passionfruit, lucuma, sapote mamey, and yacón are among the 'well-known' Peruvian specialties," says Edwin.

"We've been working for years to get these products on the map. We promote them at events like Fruit Logistica in Berlin and Fruit Attraction in Madrid. Organizations like Promperu and the Peruvian Embassy in the Netherlands are aware of what we're doing."

"They've been using our imports for many years to promote these products. That happened just last week at a PromPeru promotion in the Rotterdam Markthal. There was a bus at Schiphol Airport too," continues Janssen.

"And these products will also be at events like the Peruvian food festival in the Netherlands. As will that country's ambassador to the Netherlands. That event will be from October 28 to 31 in the Leonardo Royal Hotel in the Hague. French chef Lourdes Pluvinage of El Picaflor restaurant in Paris and Sido de Brabander [from the Netherlands] will be there. They will use our products to prepare fantastic meals."

"Peruvian cuisine has been highly regarded in South America for many years. It's now conquering the rest of the world too. There are already several Peruvian restaurants in the world's top 25. And their numbers are also increasing in the Netherlands," Edwin concludes.
