Farmers expect an abundant harvest this year

Chinese ginger harvest has begun

Freshly-harvested ginger is about to enter the Chinese market. The weather conditions in ginger production areas have been good. Farmers expect an abundant harvest this year. Mr. Wang Junjie, sales manager at Jining Shangzhuo Food Co., Ltd., recently shared his insight in the production and export conditions of Chinese ginger.

The peak period of the ginger harvest in Shandong takes place in the middle of October. The weather conditions have been excellent. There was not too much rainfall and there have been no natural disasters. That is why farmers expect the product quality and production volume to be great this season. The new ginger requires one month of sun-drying and processing, but will then be ready for export in late December.

Ginger trade in wholesale markets is relatively slow at the moment, especially because the ginger reserves have not yet been depleted. Traders in second- and third-tier markets show little interest in supplementing their stock. The delivery volume in domestic e-commerce and supermarkets is still alright, but there is a lot of pressure on the price. The price has dropped somewhat in the last few weeks.

"For many farmers in Shandong this is the busiest time of the year. There is a shortage of workers and that pushes the price up. Some exporters have no other option but to add 1,000 yuan [155 USD] per ton on top of the reported price just to compensate for labor costs. And some exporters choose to delay their delivery of overseas orders until the busiest time of the agricultural season is over and labor becomes cheaper," explained manager Wang. "The prices of Brazilian and Thai ginger are quite low this season. These prices create competition for Chinese ginger. Only the markets in Europe, Canada, and Thailand currently have strong demand for ginger. The export price has slowly been falling since the beginning of September. The FOB price of ginger shipped from Qingdao to Rotterdam is currently 1,200 USD per ton."

"Cargo space is now more readily available than two weeks ago, but the shipping price is still high. And in many large ports around the world shipping containers are piling up. These conditions create a lot of uncertainty in the global ginger market. Shipping containers often arrive with significant delays. Many ports have a shortage of workers, which delays processing, creates backlogs, and can add as much as half a month to the shipping period," said manager Wang. "But people in the industry expect the situation to improve in late October."

Jining Shangzhuo Food is specialized in the export of garlic, ginger, and onions. The company has an annual export volume of around 2,000 shipping containers.
