Yara develops a new foliar fertilizer for banana cultivation

Banana growers now have a new foliar nutrition solution for their crops. The Norwegian company  Yara, which has been present in Ecuador for more than fifteen years, developed an efficient alternative that aims to improve soil health: the YaraVita Banatrel foliar fertilizer.

According to the company, this specific foliar application solution for banana cultivation, which they launched on Monday, provides a balanced supply of key nutrients for optimal fruit development, such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, and boron. It also contains agents that improve its raw material to enhance its effectiveness in adverse field conditions. These agents also supply the nutrients to the crop in a sustained manner.

"Foliar nutrition increases efficiency and improves the quality of the crop. The absorption of nutrients through the foliage complements the plant's nutrition by its root and is decisive for the plant to meet the necessary levels of nutrients it requires, especially in peak times of demand or of higher nutritional consumption. The main advantage of YaraVita Banatrel is its more concentrated formulation that generates greater productivity in the crop, helps producers increase their profitability and optimize the use of soil,” stated Jaime Vinces, commercial manager of Yara Ecuador.

Yara's new fertilizer has been shown to increase crop ratio by up to 31% and bunch weight by up to 17%.

Moreover, the company also has the Yara TankMixIT platform, which helps farmers better plan their spray programs (air application) with most of the inputs in the YaraVita range.

“The farmer enters the product he wants to use, as well as the associated spray material, and the app will show them the results of the compatibility tests and in the field results. This ensures the affinity of inputs and optimization of resources,” the company stated.

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Ecuador currently grows bananas on 176,000 hectares and 95% of them use foliar nutrition.
