September 29: International Food Waste Day

SPAR launches Too Good To Go throughout Austria

To mark International Food Waste Day, SPAR and Too Good To Go are extending their cooperation to the whole of Austria. Following a successful test at SPAR-Gourmet, customers will be able to save food in all SPAR and EUROSPAR stores as well as seven INTERSPAR locations in Vienna and the surrounding area throughout Austria starting Monday, October 4. Products that are still in perfect condition but were not sold during the day can be purchased in a surprise bag at one-third of the original price. The initiative is another component of SPAR's strategy to prevent food waste.

Around a third of the food produced worldwide does not end up on the plate, but is wasted. Statistically, therefore, each item produced between September 29 and December 31 ends up in the garbage can. September 29 has therefore been designated the "International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste" by the United Nations.

"This highly symbolic day is wonderfully suited to presenting another component of our measures against food waste: Starting October 4, we will be working with Too Good To Go throughout Austria," announced SPAR CEO KR Hans K. Reisch. Georg Strasser, Country Manager Austria of Too Good To Go, adds: "With this offer, SPAR is taking another step against food waste and thus against one of the biggest social and ecological problems of our time. We are very pleased about the cooperation."

First food retailer with nationwide cooperation
As of October 4, SPAR and Too Good To Go will extend the cooperation to all of the approximately 700 SPAR and EUROSPAR stores as well as selected INTERSPAR hypermarkets in Vienna and the surrounding area. Numerous independent SPAR retailers have also been on board from the start. This makes SPAR the first grocer to offer this surprise bag nationwide throughout Austria.

Another step against food waste
Thanks to accurate ordering, fast and precise logistics, and sales just before the best-before date, only about one percent of the food on offer at SPAR is not sold. Some of this is passed on to social markets, food banks, Caritas or other organizations, which pick up goods one to five times a week, depending on their opening hours. Every SPAR location in whose vicinity there are social or food-sharing organizations cooperates with such organizations. Too Good To Go complements these cooperation partners with immediate effect.

About Too Good To Go
Too Good To Go is the world's largest app against food waste. The app enables businesses such as bakeries, restaurants, cafes, hotels and supermarkets to sell their surplus food to self-pickup customers at a discounted price. Too Good To Go thus offers a sustainable solution that benefits partner businesses, consumers and the environment: excellent food for customers, less waste for businesses and resource conservation for the environment. In Austria, more than 2,200 partner businesses and 700,000 users are already saving surplus food from being wasted every day.
