Slovenia: Mercator reports growth in profit in first half
Mercator Group reported a net profit of €10.5mln in the first half of 2021, compared to a net loss of €69.2mln one year earlier. The company's sales revenue dropped 0.4% to €1.06bln, of which retail accounted for €898.7mln (-1.2%).

UK: Aldi says deliveries normal despite lorry driver shortage
The boss of supermarket chain Aldi UK has told the BBC he doesn't envisage any disruption for customers this Christmas. There have been dire warnings about food shortages and empty shelves due to a chronic shortage of heavy goods vehicle (HGV) lorry drivers. But chief executive Giles Hurley says his deliveries are moving as normal. "There's no doubt current circumstances are testing the industry...but it's business as usual for us," he said.

Global meal kit delivery giant HelloFresh invests in Russian counterpart Chefmarket
HelloFresh, the Germany-based international meal kit giant, has acquired an “approximately 10% stake” in its Russian counterpart Chefmarket. The amount of this investment (a capital injection) was not disclosed, but the companies mentioned a “single-digit mln euro figure” in their announcement.

A sticky situation - Albert Heijn stores 'glued shut' in Amsterdam
Some 18 Albert Heijn stores saw their locks glued shut in an act of vandalism with no clear motive according to Dutch authorities. The affected stores are all located in Amsterdam, with both door locks and in some cases roller shutters affected, a company spokesperson told news portal nos.nl.

UK: Asda takes collection service from EVCL Chill in-house
Asda has confirmed that it will take a collection service provided by its logistics partner EVCL Chill and 290 employees in-house. EVCL Chill works with Asda to deliver its ‘Asda Collect’ service, which transports chilled products from Asda suppliers, to 2 sites in Daventry and Rochdale before they go out to Asda stores.

UK: Aldi to invest £1.3bln as sales hit new record
Aldi, Britain’s lowest-priced and favourite supermarket, has pledged to invest £1.3bln over the next 2 years (2022-2023) in a bid to further accelerate its share of the UK grocery market. The plans are expected to create more than 2,000 new jobs next year, adding to the 7,000 permanent roles already created over the past 2 years. In its annual trading update, Aldi said sales in the UK and Ireland had grown 10.2% to a record £13.5bln in the year to 31st December 2020 (2019: £12.3bln).

Grocery retailer Caprabo has announced that it has set a new goal to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. New Zealand: 2degrees founder Tex Edwards behind audacious bid to break supermarket duopoly
Tex Edwards, the maverick entrepreneur who founded 2degrees and broke Spark and Vodafone’s duopoly over the mobile market, is understood to be leading a charge to do the same again with groceries. Edwards is a key figure behind a submission filed with the Commerce Commission by an organisation identified only as “Northelia version 1.4” that set out a proposal to set up a third supermarket group. Northelia said in its submission that it would be able to “mobilise a capital base in excess of $1bln” to create a new supermarket chain, if the watchdog pushed ahead with market reforms and forced Countdown and New World and Pak ‘n Save owner Foodstuffs to sell 200 of their stores.

US: Whole Foods expanding $10 delivery fee nationwide
Whole Foods Market is implementing a $9.95 service fee on grocery delivery orders nationwide beginning October 25, a company spokesperson said. This includes those placed by Amazon Prime members, who previously got free delivery on orders over $35. The announcement comes less than a month after Whole Foods began testing the fee addition in several markets, including the Detroit, Chicago and Boston areas. The spokesperson said the fee helps the grocer cover the higher operating costs it’s now shouldering for delivery orders without increasing product prices.

US: Costco Wholesale Corporation reports fourth quarter and fiscal year 2021 operating results
Costco Wholesale Corporation (“Costco” or the “Company”) announced its operating results for the 16-week 4th quarter and the 52-week fiscal year, ended August 29, 2021. US: Weis Markets kicks off DoorDash delivery
Weis Markets has added DoorDash as another third-party partner for on-demand grocery delivery. Sunbury, Pennsylvania-based Weis said that DoorDash same-day delivery service is now available at more than 170 stores across its Mid-Atlantic market area via the DoorDash online marketplace and mobile app. Customers receive their grocery order in an hour, on average.
