A Vancouver-based agri-tech firm has purchased a farm management system company in Perth, Western Australia. SemiosBio Technologies paid $100 million for the Australian company Agworld Pty Ltd. Agworld was formed in 2009 and helps farmers track and share field data with other growers as well as offering advice on farm operations.
SemiosBio, formed in 2010, offers real-time crop data and pest management support for farmers who grow tree fruits, nuts and other permanent crops. The company use wireless sensors and real-time analytics to monitor temperature, soil moisture, disease and pest pressure in fruit and nut orchards and to direct exactly when and where to apply pest controls, water and other resources.
As reported on vancouversun.com, frost prediction helps direct planting and harvesting to reduce crop losses, while disease sensing informs precision application of antifungals.
