The Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day holiday followed one after another. “Vegetables are in sufficient supply, and prices have changed from rising to falling recently,” said Zhang Jing, chief analyst of the vegetable market analysis and early warning team of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the national average wholesale price of 28 kinds of vegetables under monitoring was 4.58 RMB/kg in August, up 9.6% month-on-month and down 0.7% year-on-year. In terms of varieties, the prices of 21 varieties rose month-on-month, while 7 varieties fell. Among these, celery and Chinese cabbage rose the most.
The main reason for the increase in vegetable prices in August was the severe weather and the change of growing seasons. Affected by adverse weather, such as large-scale high temperatures and rain in the early period as well as hail in late August, the short-term supply of vegetables in some areas was not smooth. Especially in some southern producing areas, leafy vegetables have been affected by natural disasters and reduced yields and production.
The supply of leafy vegetables in summer ended ahead of schedule. In cold areas in the north, where the temperature dropped rapidly after the rain, and the growth of vegetables slowed down, causing vegetable prices to continue to rise. In addition, as the weather turns cooler, most varieties gradually enter the crop rotation period, and frequent price fluctuations increase the overall upward range of vegetable prices.
According to reports, the weather improved in September, and the scale of transportation of northern vegetables to the south decreased seasonally. The supply of vegetables that had been delayed in the market gradually resumed, and the number of local vegetables on the market gradually increased, alleviating the "lazy summer", and the price of vegetables began to trend downwards. The latest data shows that on September 16, the national average wholesale price of 28 kinds of vegetables under monitoring was 4.53 RMB/kg, down 1.1% month-on-month and 5.2% year-on-year.
Vegetable prices are generally high this year, and growers have a strong intention to expand their growing areas. The planting area of summer vegetables in the cold northern regions increased year-on-year, and the supply in the season is sufficient. After autumn, as vegetables are put on the market, especially after these two festivals, the prices of vegetables will go down seasonally.
