An intensive and sustainable citrus fruit cultivation starts in the nursery

Azienda agricola Vivaistica Terre Bianche is located at the foothills of Mount Etna, on the Catania plain. The company boasts an experience spanning four generations and specializes in the production of citrus fruit and olive trees for Sicilian, national and foreign intensive groves.

Giuseppe Crisafulli (in the photo above) manages the nursery together with his sister Tindara, a landscape agronomist specializing in the aesthetic and functional recovery of the agricultural heritage.

"We follow cultivation phases starting from the seed and continue throughout the choice of certified varieties and grafting. We produce 150,000 plants a year, with a human and professional capital capable of guaranteeing productions of the highest quality. The company is growing and evolving - we started with a small plot and have since expanded to cover eight hectares that can meet the needs of an ever-demanding national and international clientele," explains Giuseppe Crisafulli.

The company boasts around fifty varieties of blonde and pigmented oranges, lemons, tangerines and similar selected for their productivity and according to the island's citrus fruit tradition. In addition to high-quality productions, the company also focuses on technological and varietal innovation. Clients come mainly from within the region or the domestic territory but, ever since the company expanded, demand is coming in from Europe and overseas as well.

Varieties are constantly updated, and the search for productive rootstocks is ongoing. There are currently multiple varieties grafted on nine new rootstocks such as Citrange Troyer, Citrange Carrizo, Citrumelo swingle, Citrus aurantium, Citrus macrophylla, C22, C35, Citrus wolkameriana and Forner alcaide 5.

"Seeds, propagation material and plants are all certified. We work to reach a high quality standard, which is expressed in the vegetative and productive performances of our clients' crops. Over 60% of the production is under anti-insect nets. Plants are equipped with a passport and CAC (Conformitas agraria comunitatis) certification."

"At Terre Bianche, production and environmental and human wellness are in harmony. We work hard for the landscape sustainability of the production areas, which are often neglected. Here, the citrus trees grow as in a large garden - their beauty is able of valorizing the roots of our land. This is why our company welcomes national and international delegations and works in partnership with bodies and associations to improve and innovate," adds Tindara Crisafulli.
