The latest data from Kantar Worldpanel on the market share distribution in Spain, which corresponds to this summer (specifically, the last 12 weeks), confirms the leadership of the Mercadona supermarket chain. The Valencian firm has a market share of 24.8%, i.e. 0.5% more than in the summer of 2020.
Mercadona is followed by Carrefour, which had a great increase in its market share. Carrefour is the chain that had the greatest increase, going from 8.5% in August 2020 to 9.2% in the same month of this year.
After surpassing Dia, Lidl ranked third with a 6.8% share. Dia's market share fell to 5.1%, i.e. 0.4% points less than last summer.
The Eroski Group remained stable and ranked fourth with a 4.7% market share. The French group Auchan (owner of Alcampo) lost 0.1% of its share, going from a 3.3% share in August 2020 to a 3.2% share in 2021, and ranking fifth.
Experts and analysts from the sector coincide in pointing out the decisive moment that distribution is experiencing, marked by the expansion plans of Lidl and Aldi, acquisitions (such as the one carried out by El Corte Inglés and Sánchez Romero this same year), and the entry into the country of companies like the Russian retailer Mere.
