In the province of Ragusa, in the far south-eastern corner of Sicily, courgettes are grown in the off-season, in winter. They are cultivated in polytunnels and greenhouses. From Rosolini (Syracuse) to Palma di Montechiaro (Agrigento), and passing through the coastal areas of Ragusa and Caltanissetta, the territory is particularly suitable for this type of cultivation.
Gautier Italia's mid-season range of dark green courgettes is called Centauro F1. The variety is vigorous and bearing an expanded foliage with short internodes.
"This makes it easy to locate and to carry out the harvest of the vegetables. As a result, there are considerable savings on labor costs. The plant also has a high tolerance to powdery mildew, which reduces crop losses due to the pathogen while also reducing the need for treatments," said Bruno Vacirca, Sicily sales manager at Gautier Sementi.
The lower number of treatments required is familiar to major retailers and the organic market. Fruiting is consistent throughout the growing cycle, even in extreme conditions of low light and low temperatures. In addition, the plant condition allows the growth cycle to be extended and yields to be increased. The fruit is straight with slight facets, has an excellent length-to-diameter ratio and is easy to handle and place in crates and trays,” added the expert.
"The color is bright dark green and very eye-catching when displayed on supermarket shelves. The long shelf life after harvest is excellent, with the crops having a very small stylar scar. This determines an early expulsion of the flower, which otherwise in humid conditions could lead to rot and consequent loss of product," concluded Vacirca.
