Herold Hage, N&K:

"First Peruvian blueberries arrive on good European market"

N&K has received its first blueberries from Peru. N&K is the French Kinobé group's import office in the Netherlands. "The berries are arriving on a good market. Most of the European fruit is off the market. And the current Peruvian volumes aren't huge. That makes prices very attractive," says Herold Hage.

N&K focuses entirely on the Southern Hemisphere blueberry season. "We carry South African berries. And all berries from Peru under the El Mayoral brand. Peru is expecting a good crop this year, with large berries. We again have increased access to new varieties like Emerald and Snowchaser. These are somewhat sweeter."

"All the berries are presently being supplied in 12x125g. Later in the season, we get bulk berries too. Those we package according to customer demand. We sell the blueberries mainly to retailers throughout Europe. And through re-exporters to the Russian market, among others," explains Herold.

Planting has increased considerably, especially in Peru. Despite this, this importer does not see the market becoming saturated. "Following in avocados footsteps, consumer purchases of blueberries have soared. In recent years, it seems the larger packaging means you can sell significantly more."

"Also, Peru is increasingly replacing Chile on the blueberry market. The Peruvian berries have a higher return on investment. They have significantly higher quality, too. And transportation is shorter and cheaper," Herold concludes.
