In the Netherlands, Hars & Hagebauer received its first Chinese pomelos of the 2021 season yesterday. "It's, of course, a very different year than 2020," says Piet Hoek.
"The absurd container prices mean pomelo imports differ greatly from previous years. However, as always, we want to be the first to receive these. Importing the first containers is a bit like receiving a treasure. It's symbolic but important for your image."
"Hars & Hagebauer specializes in pomelos and various other products," Piet says. "We'll receive much less of these fruits. But we still want to serve several regular customers. Limited quantities are available for free market each week." Hars & Hagebauer will carry the pomelos under its own brand, Carolien, for the first time. That is named after Piet's daughter.
And where are those container prices headed? "Who knows. Those arriving in the next few weeks are even pricier. Container prices just keep rising," Piet concludes.
