Thomas Heeren, Fruchtagentur Altes Land about the lemon season:

"We have slightly larger volumes of organic lemons this year than last year"

Fruchtagentur Altes Land Ltd is located in the largest contiguous fruit growing area in Northern Europe, directly in the Altes Land. It has been working closely with the company P.A.S.A.M Agrumi - a lemon producer from Sicily - daily for over 15 years. "We exclusively market the organic lemons from P.A.S.A.M Agrumi throughout Europe," says Thomas Heeren, managing director of Fruchtagentur Altes Land. They will be able to offer Demeter goods in the new season as well.

The recovery of the catering and hotel industry also makes suppliers of citrus fruits take notice. Heeren sees the current situation as positive: "In general, the volumes sold in the new season are somewhat higher than last year. The quality is currently very good as well."

Good prices, volumes and quality
The last lemon season, on the other hand, was a bit difficult, as sales were more challenging due to the closure of restaurants and hotels. "We were still able to achieve good prices and volumes. There was a noticeable price increase in May, June and July. As far as the quality was concerned, we had no problems. Even in the middle of the season, there were no significant problems with the weather. In the summer, the Verdelli variety was quite good. However, we also noticed that demand was higher due to the pandemic, especially among the retail chains. This season, however, the situation has returned to normal," says Heeren.

Overall, he says, no disadvantages were apparent. In terms of packaging, the company is "completely in tune with our customers." With regard to larger chains, however, things are moving more and more in the direction of avoiding plastic, he says. The fruit agency starts with the new lemon season around late September / early October. In addition to the yellow fruit, there are many other items on the product range.
