US: Big Y rolls out Scan & Go in partnership with FutureProof Retail
Big Y has partnered with FutureProof Retail (FPR) to roll out its new myExpress Checkout Scan & Go service. Big Y customers can now check out on their phone and skip the line at the cash register. Customers simply scan their items with the myExpress Checkout app, bag their items and pay in the app to complete their purchase. They can also view Specials, and redeem myBigY targeted offers and digital coupons while they shop.

Canada: Alimentation Couche-Tard announces its results for its first quarter of fiscal year 2022
For its first quarter ended July 18, 2021, Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. ("Couche-Tard" or the "Corporation") announces net earnings of $764.4mln, representing $0.71 per share on a diluted basis. The results for the first quarter of fiscal 2022 were affected by a pre-tax net foreign exchange gain of $8.6mln, as well as pre-tax acquisition costs of $0.8mln.

Farmstead announced that Oahu-based Farm Link Hawaii, known for connecting shoppers with the best produce, proteins, and packaged goods Hawaii has to offer, is adopting Farmstead’s Grocery OS, a proprietary technology stack that helps grocers automate critical parts of its operations, such as procurement, picking and packing, delivery route optimization, and the customer ordering process.

US: NGA approves of latest hours-of-service waiver extension for truckers
The National Grocers Association (NGA) has expressed its support for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) extension of its hours-of-service emergency declaration, which was set to expire August 31, but has now been extended through November 30. Since March 2020, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, FMSCA has provided hours-of-service flexibility for commercial drivers conveying certain categories of eligible products critical to the supply chain. The agency has extended the waiver based on feedback from independent grocers.

US: Walmart teams with Instacart to offer delivery in NYC
Shoppers in parts of New York City can now order and receive groceries from Walmart through Instacart. Walmart does not operate any stores in NYC and stopped delivery service through the e-commerce service it acquired,, in 2020. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Instacart shoppers will pick up customers’ orders from Walmart stores outside the city and bring them to their homes in a same-day time frame. The service is available to customers in areas of Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens but not in Manhattan.

US: Dollar General beats the labor crunch
Dollar General says it has hired more than 50,000 new employees since mid-July, and it's not done with its latest hiring spree yet. The retailer is looking to hire additional employees for opportunities currently available in stores, distribution centers, the DG Private Fleet and Store Support Center.

US: Vehicle provider increases production to accommodate uptick in grocery deliveries
As many food retailers look to accommodate the growing consumer demand for grocery delivery, Utilimaster, The Shyft Group's go-to-market brand, has increased production of its lineup of refrigerated vehicles suited to meet the challenge. During the past several months, the company has received orders for more than 500 refrigerated and other units from grocery chains around the country.

Walmart brings ghost kitchen concept to U.S. stores
Walmart is expanding its relationship with a Canadian ghost kitchen operator to the United States. The discount giant will open its 1st ghost kitchen operated by platform Ghost Kitchens Brands at its store in Rochester, New York. The location builds upon an existing collaboration between Walmart Canada and the scalable “ghost kitchen.” The Rochester Walmart location will offer meal pickup or delivery available from up to 25 brands.

Amazon to recruit 55,000 staff for expansion drive
Amazon is looking to hire 55,000 staff globally for corporate jobs and roles in robotics, research and engineering. About 40,000 jobs will be in the US, with 2,500 in the UK and the remainder mostly in India, Germany and Japan. Chief executive Andy Jassy said Amazon needed more staff to keep pace with expansion of its retail, cloud computing and advertising arms. "Amazon continues to grow quickly, and relentlessly invent across many areas", he said in a statement.

Hungary's Indotek could take minority stake in Auchan Retail's local unit
Hungarian real estate group Indotek is in talks with ELO Group about forming an alliance that could involve taking a minority stake in French retailer Auchan Retail's Hungarian unit, ELO said in a statement. The move would fit into a broader drive under Prime Minister Viktor Orban, which has seen the state and Hungarian investors boost their stakes in key sectors of the economy, such as the media, energy and banking.

Czech retailer Albert expands rollout of digital price tags
Retailer Albert has announced plans to introduce digital price tags in another 10 stores by the end of the year. The company has already installed more than half a million electronic price tags in its stores throughout the Czech Republic in a bid to save paper.

Bulgaria: Fantastico Group unveils new multi-use outlet in Pernik
Bulgarian retailer Fantastico Group has unveiled a new multi-use retail and entertainment complex in Pernik, near the Bulgarian capital, Sofia. The location, which welcomed its first customers at the end of August, just 10 months after construction started, covers some 10,753 sq. m of floor space, and cost around BGN25mln (€12.78mln) to develop, the retailer said.
