US: NGA approves of latest hours-of-service waiver extension for truckers
The National Grocers Association (NGA) has expressed its support for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) extension of its hours-of-service emergency declaration, which was set to expire August 31, but has now been extended through November 30. Since March 2020, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, FMSCA has provided hours-of-service flexibility for commercial drivers conveying certain categories of eligible products critical to the supply chain. The agency has extended the waiver based on feedback from independent grocers.

US: Walmart teams with Instacart to offer delivery in NYC
Shoppers in parts of New York City can now order and receive groceries from Walmart through Instacart. Walmart does not operate any stores in NYC and stopped delivery service through the e-commerce service it acquired, Jet.com, in 2020. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Instacart shoppers will pick up customers’ orders from Walmart stores outside the city and bring them to their homes in a same-day time frame. The service is available to customers in areas of Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens but not in Manhattan.

Walmart brings ghost kitchen concept to U.S. stores
Walmart is expanding its relationship with a Canadian ghost kitchen operator to the United States. The discount giant will open its 1st ghost kitchen operated by platform Ghost Kitchens Brands at its store in Rochester, New York. The location builds upon an existing collaboration between Walmart Canada and the scalable “ghost kitchen.” The Rochester Walmart location will offer meal pickup or delivery available from up to 25 brands.

Amazon to recruit 55,000 staff for expansion drive
Amazon is looking to hire 55,000 staff globally for corporate jobs and roles in robotics, research and engineering. About 40,000 jobs will be in the US, with 2,500 in the UK and the remainder mostly in India, Germany and Japan. Chief executive Andy Jassy said Amazon needed more staff to keep pace with expansion of its retail, cloud computing and advertising arms. Bulgaria: Fantastico Group unveils new multi-use outlet in Pernik
Bulgarian retailer Fantastico Group has unveiled a new multi-use retail and entertainment complex in Pernik, near the Bulgarian capital, Sofia. The location, which welcomed its first customers at the end of August, just 10 months after construction started, covers some 10,753 sq. m of floor space, and cost around BGN25mln (€12.78mln) to develop, the retailer said.
