A protected variety of Australian mango that will be sold exclusively at El Corte Inglés

The first mangoes grown in Alicante have just gone on sale

The first mangoes grown in Alicante have just gone on sale. Until now, Spanish mangoes came only from the producing areas of Malaga and Granada. The mango, which will be marketed under the Ibérica Fresh brand, will be sold exclusively in Spain, in the fruit shops of El Corte Inglés.

"This year, we are the first people to commercialize mangoes from Spain", stated Pedro Perez Marin, the co-founder and Director of Business Development at Ibérica Fresh. "We grow these mangoes on the hill of a mountain, 3 km away from the coast. This area almost has a tropical microclimate, as the average temperatures are high and it's not very prone to frost," he added.

The company grows the RA17 protected variety, which was developed in Australia after 17 years of study and that started to be marketed in the oceanic country about 6 years ago. This variety is only grown in Alicante and is available from mid-August to the end of September.

"This is the first protected mango variety to be marketed in Spain. This mango combines the best attributes of the usual varieties that we find in the market. Its main advantages are its low level of fibers, its small stone, an incomparable sweetness with a touch of stone fruit, and a very fine texture," says Pedro Perez.

The company presented this mango with a simple yet powerful slogan: 'The finest mango, from the tree to your table.' "We cover the crops with mesh at a height of 6 meters to protect the crops from inclement weather and to distribute the sunlight evenly on the crops so the fruits obtain the color they need," he said. "Our main objective is to bring fresh fruit to Spanish households; fruits that are carefully produced in Spain."

The product will be offered throughout the national territory exclusively in El Corte Inglés. "We wanted to exclusively launch this product with a distributor who fully understands its real value. We may extend this exclusivity to 5-10 years in the future. We are talking about a protected variety, a mango-loving producer, an unbeatable brand, communication, and business partner structure," stated Guillermo de Scals, agronomist and director of Ibérica Fresh.

There will be limited production because this is the second productive year and only the fruits that meet IBERICA FRESH standards can enter the brand. "Mango ripens on the tree and is collected only and exclusively when its ripeness is optimal. The fruits are selected daily and are on sale in less than 24 hours," stated Guillermo de Scals.

"We forecast we'll produce at least 6 times more mango in about 5 years, becoming one of the main mango producers in Spain. Furthermore, since the commercial period in Alicante is quite short, we are studying the possibility of also producing this variety in Peru or Brazil, just like we produce it here. If the tests are satisfactory, we could also be producing it in South America in nearly 2 years, significantly expanding our production schedule," he stated.
