"Essenza is the new line of vegetable spreads we developed during the pandemic. While in lockdown, we had time to think and experiment new recipes to meet market demands, which are increasingly oriented towards healthy products and the short chain. Essenza has the objective of valorizing the genuine flavor of the vegetables freshly-harvested from our sun-kissed fields in Campania," reports Michele Carbone, sole administrator and sales manager at Carbone Conserve Vegetali.
Michele and Nino Carbone, owners of the historic tomato and vegetable preserve brand.
Carbone Conserve Vegetali was established in 1982 as an offshoot of Carbone Srl and boasts two facilities - a processing plant covering approximately 2000 sq m with a 4500 sq m warehouse and a labelling facility. In the 1980s, Carbone's main activities focused on semi-processed products such as pickled vegetables and salads. In the early 1990s, the company started with the first tests to produce finished products in 3 and 5 kg tins. In the early 2000s, it started producing all kinds of canned vegetables including grilled vegetables, artichokes and tasty semi-dry tomatoes.
"This summer, we have set the first stone of what in 2022 will become our new 4000 sq m facility here in San Valentino Torio (SA), which will provide us with enough space to strengthen our leading lines like Essenza, the new line of vegetable spreads in 580 g jars that includes friarielli, escarole, beetroots, pumpkin, purple carrots from Avezzano (AQ) and red and yellow cherry tomatoes."
One of the main products of the Campania tradition is the Friarello di Napoli spread. Friarelli are a variety of broccoli very popular in the local culinary tradition and are slightly more bitter than turnip greens from Apulia.

"Friarielli are also available steamed and placed in 1 kg glass jars with extra virgin olive oil destined to the restaurant industry. The greens with the more tender leaves are seasoned with oil, garlic and chili peppers. Once used only in Campania, friarielli have now become popular abroad as well - 'Sasicc e friariell' pizza (sausage and friarielli) is known all over the world. They can also be used to make various recipes: they are excellent with pasta, gourmet pizzas and are also ideal as a side."
"We are a dynamic company that keeps evolving and our products are available in leading domestic and foreign distribution chains including Metro Cash&Carry, with which we have recently started collaborating. Our main objective is now to set up a capillary distribution network on a national level so consumers can easily find our products all over Italy."
