Rhineland-Palatinate: Good to very good yields
The potato market continues to be well supplied with regional goods to meet demand, according to the Rhineland-Palatinate Chamber of Agriculture. Producer prices, which are under pressure in surplus areas, are also influencing pricing here. Further price corrections are expected. Occasionally, promotional sales at promotional prices are already underway, including at discounters. Producers in the regions are reporting good to very good volume yields for the connecting varieties.
Hesse: Demand remains calm
With the start of the main harvest, supply is becoming more extensive. As a result, producer prices have again been adjusted downward. Despite interruptions, grubbing operations are progressing well and yields per hectare are better. Meanwhile, demand remains quiet. Further price reductions are expected, Landesbetrieb Landwirtschaft Hessen reports.
Lower Saxony: Growth about 10 days behind schedule
As reported by the Lower Saxony Farmers' Association, low temperatures in the spring caused below-average potato starts in many places. Furthermore, the potatoes could only develop slowly. The growth phase is about 10 days behind schedule, which means that the tuber was comparatively small at last. There seems to be an interesting market development this year as well.
Schleswig-Holstein: Below-average harvest expected
The early potato season has ended well says the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Agriculture. However, the main harvest in this state is also delayed due to a lack of sunlight during the growing season. Market participants assume that the phase of storing potatoes will not begin until mid-September.
Sources say the packing market is doing well. The peeled potato sector is doing less well. Commercial kitchens are not operating at full capacity and are therefore taking less product. There is therefore a lack of outlets for lower quality potatoes. There is hardly any mail order business. As a result, these have to find their way onto the market at lower prices.
Overall, a below-average harvest is currently expected. Average qualities are reported. However, the storage capacity cannot yet be assessed. The market environment is stable. Some potatoes are being offered as promotional goods in food retailing.
