Italian pomegranate season about to start

The first Lome Super Fruit pomegranates will be available as of week 36. "On Monday, September 6th, we will start with the first supplies of Shany and Emek pomegranates, two early varieties that have enabled us to begin the season earlier than expected for the past two years. Then it will be the turn of Ako, and the campaign will truly begin with Wonderful, which will be available until late March," explains Dario De Lisi, sales manager at Masseria Fruttirossi.

"We have around 30 hectares of new varieties and harvesting will start next week, so that we can guarantee fruit that is always fresh and ripe to the markets. This year, we are expecting double the volumes of 2020. Before harvesting begins, fruits will improve their grade, Brix level and color."

Shany variety

"The early reawakening of plants followed by the frost of late March/early April have forced us to reconsider the yields we expected, although quantities are higher than last year. The installation of anti-hail nets in late spring enabled us to safeguard the Shany and Emek varieties not only from the hail, but also from the heat of the past few days, as the covers can also filter a certain percentage of UV rays. The fact that we have a higher percentage of first-choice fruits is due to these new nets as well, as we managed to protect them from the sunlight and prolonged scorching temperatures."

"The season is looking promising, we have already received the first orders from various Italian markets. The campaign will last approximately 7 months and there will be many clients and consumers to please with our fully-Italian pomegranates grown in fertile Apulia."
