“The arrival of large calibers from Peru may temporarily unbalance the avocado market”

Given the large volumes exported by Peru this year again, the market held up rather well until last week. “We have been relatively satisfied with the prices given the very large offer. For this, we are grateful for mass retailers who have been alert since the beginning of the season and have organized promotional actions to highlight the products,” explains François Bellivier, development manager at Capexo.

Promotional actions on large calibers are expected
But since last week, the situation seems to be changing. “Despite a nice evolution since the start of the Peruvian campaign, there are still volumes to be sold until the end of September, and these are mostly large caliber avocados, which could disturb the market. Our challenge in the coming weeks will then be to sell this merchandise as much as possible. It is important to continue to organize promotional actions, because the Peruvian operators’ knowledge and experience guarantee avocados of good quality, that ripen well and with a nice dry matter rate. I hope that mass retailers will get organized, during this final stretch, to sell the large calibers.” 

At the crossroads of several origins
Several origins are currently present on the avocado market. “We are in transitional phases, with the end of Peru, South Africa and Kenya, and the beginning of Colombia, Mexico and Chile. Colombia might stand out this year because it has more and more volumes and the operators of the sector are working better than ever. We do not hear much about Chile, which will see a strong increase compared to last year and will return to levels similar to 2019/2020 and 2018/2019. The only unknown will be the consumption level on the domestic market which is currently very active. It should be found on the market, like last year, at high prices. Mexico, especially the Jalisco region, will be very present this year due to a cyclical increase related to the increase in planted surfaces. The availability and disparity of these different origins make it more complicated for our clients to get organized in terms of segmentation but it is certain that the market will be under pressure until the end of September.”
