Production volume declined by around 30%

Production season of Taiwanese pomelo has officially begun

The Taiwanese pomelo has long been popular with consumers for its superior product quality, tender fruit flesh, and ideal balance between sweet and sour. The new production season of Taiwanese pomelo has officially begun. The supply season lasts for one month until the middle of September. Weather conditions were not great this year, so the harvest was delayed by around 10 days compared to previous years and the production volume declined by 30%.

"Production areas of Taiwanese pomelo can mostly be found in Tainan and Hualian, but there are also pomelo plantations in Yunlin and Yilan. Taiwanese pomelo are sold in China and Hong Kong, as well as further abroad in Japan and Singapore. Despite the decline in production volume, the opening price of Taiwanese pomelo remained the same. This is primarily because the overall market conditions are worse and the overall price level dropped." This is according to Mr. Rock Yen of Queen Want Trading Co., Ltd.

In addition to Taiwanese pomelo, Chinese consumers also like import pomelo from Thailand and domestic pomelo from Fujian. Under regular conditions the Taiwanese pomelo enter the market earlier than pomelo from Fujian. And the smaller size of Taiwanese pomelo makes the fruit flesh more tender. But the fruit peel of Fujian pomelo is thicker, which allows the fruit to be stored for longer and so the supply season of Fujian pomelo lasts longer.

According to Mr. Rock Yen, "we sell our Taiwanese pomelo under the 'xiongfa' brand primarily through wholesale markets in first- and second tier cities across China. At the same time, we also sell some of our pomelo to collective buyers as gift packages during the Mid-Autumn Festival [21 September, 2021] period. Many consumers have become used to the idea of giving traditional moon cakes together with gift-wrapped premium fruit."

Shanghai Queen Want Trading primarily sells pomelo in 6kg packages, with 9-16 pomelo per package. However, the company also caters to e-commerce platforms with smaller 3kg gift boxes of 6-8 pomelo each. Mr. Rock Yen explained, "we promote different packaging methods to meet the diverse requirements of various customers. As far as we can tell right now, this season looks promising."
