Luxembourg cooperative turns to compostable packaging

As globally, the disposal of plastic packaging and the recycling process associated with it pose a large environmental issue, the organic farmer cooperative in Luxembourg, BIOG, has announced it will deploy more sustainable packaging methods. The compostable cellulose packaging will be produced in Germany. Other packaging will be made up of waste-wood sourced from a certified forestry commission.

According to BIOG, the packaging will be easy to dispose of at home, as it usually takes around 42 days to decompose as part of compost.

BIOGROS has been working for over a decade to find alternative solutions for plastic packaging, implementing cellulose netting for packaging citrus fruit such as oranges or lemons, for example. These have been used for the past five years. Apples and pears have been packed in paper packaging for a number of years as well.
