Dutch company's winter contracts compensating for overseas season

"Retail demand for mini watermelons rising sharply"

It's nearly the end of July. So, week 36 is approaching. That's when Kraaijeveld will get its first load of overseas melons. This Dutch company has been working with partners in South America for years. They import Brazilian melons from them. "Our winter contracts ensure that our customers are guaranteed melons during that period. We have customized services so, we do everything we can to unburden our clients," says Arjan Theunisse, Kraaijeveld's purchasing manager.

"This season, we're again expecting excellent quality melons. They should be firm and have long shelf lives. That's what we're used to with these melons." In the winter, Kraaijeveld imports watermelons and Galia, Cantaloupe, Charentais, and yellow melons. "A few years ago, the mini watermelon was a newcomer. This year, there's a sharp increase in demand from retail for these again. That's why we're focusing on this product. And why the mini watermelons are also available under contract," says Arjan.

Contracted melons - what does that involve?
Kraaijeveld's retail division is experienced in supply retailers with overseas melons. The five-person team is geared to this. 'We sell melons on contract. That means clients agree on fixed volumes and prices for a certain period. We then do all we to provide them with tailor-made solutions," explains retail salesman Julian Bal.

"For example, we can supply products in special packaging, like melons in EPS crates. The melons can also be stickered and labeled. We even think about on which pallet we will deliver the merchandise. For instance, we can deliver on CHEP/LPR pallets. We deliver using our own transport, from our location in Maasland. That means Kraaijeveld manages buyers' stock, and they order on demand."

Special melons for processing
Kraaijeveld offers all kinds of melons. That includes the processing industry. Specific characteristics like firmness are geared to clients' wishes. That's done in close consultation with suppliers. The Brix level, pressure, and packaging are also adjusted. That means certain melons can be properly processed, both by hand and machine.

"Our accumulated knowledge means we've started importing overseas melons during the summer. That's so, say, our processing customers can be sure of the right quality. But, as always, we naturally provide the right overseas melon for these clients in the winter, too," adds Arjan.

Total assortment available on winter contract
Kraaijeveld doesn't only offer melons on contract. Its entire assortment is included. "That means we can offer not only pineapples on contract. But also lettuce varieties, vegetables, and all kinds of fruit. As well as ginger and garlic," Julian concludes.
