Ruud Kester, Lyna Trade, the Netherlands:

"Good Greenskin avocado market, large Hass prices under pressure, small ones recovering"

Hass avocados aren't expensive at the moment. But Ruud Kester isn't dissatisfied with sales. Ruud's Dutch firm, Lyna Trade, connects growers and importers. "Sales are continuing well, so there's no accumulation of huge stocks," he says.

"The market is currently changing somewhat, though. Peru is there with many large sizes. Their latest shipments should be mainly large avocados. So those prices are low, at around €6. But, there's limited availability of small calibers, from 22 upwards. They're becoming more expensive. Their prices are now moving toward €9/4kg."

The market is remarkably good for Greenskin avocados. "That's for all sizes. The quality was poor in Kenya. So most growers wisely choose not to send any product. That limits the supply to some product from South Africa and Peru," Ruud continues. "Prices are at a nice level of €9 to €10 for 4 kilos. And Kenya's second season doesn't start again until September."

"Summer is usually much quieter on the exotics front. The first vacations are beginning, so it's only getting quieter. Fewer people are going away on vacation. That could stimulate sales. But there'll be a lot less grocery shopping. Fortunately, the small sizes have already started recovering. We can start the new season afresh. That's once Peru has sent their last load. Hopefully, we'll have a nice winter season. That's with avocados from Mexico, Colombia, and Chile," concludes Ruud.
