Marco Bergman, Harvest House, the Netherlands:

"Fluctuating supply will continue well into the bell pepper season"

"Spring 2021 went well for Harvest House's bell pepper sales, as did the prices. That offers no guarantees for the rest of the year, as recent figures show. Because now, halfway through the year, trade is declining somewhat," says salesman Marco Bergman. "The past few weeks have been difficult. That has everything to do with the supply of this vegetable fruit. In that respect, this season has high peaks but also deep troughs. Prices are, therefore, fluctuating wildly."

"We sell to retailers, so varying prices make things difficult. Naturally, we'd ideally like to keep prices stable. Unfortunately, that's not up to us. The recent dreary weather is making it hard for bell pepper plants to achieve a constant setting. We expect this to remain the case in the coming period. The supply pattern ups and downs will, therefore, continue well into this bell pepper season," Marco continues.

"Sales figures also differ from those of last season. The pandemic caused consumers to buy more bell peppers as tasty, healthy snacks. This trend is now declining again. Sales through retail channels have dropped just under ten percent from 2020. The airfreight situation has, regrettably, not changed."

"This is another consequence of the pandemic. There's still little air travel possible towards North America. So the demand for our product has also all but disappeared. At Harvest House, however, we remain positive. We assume it'll again become possible to supply the whole world with our delicious, healthy Dutch bell peppers," Marco concludes.
