Egyptian sweet potato season has kicked off

“I’d say there’s be about 20 to 30% more volumes of sweet potatoes this year”

It’s not been very busy yet since the Egyptian sweet potato season started. With the American sweet potato season still going, as well as the Honduras season, demand is expected to pick up once these seasons come to an end. Meanwhile, Egypt will have larger volumes of sweet potatoes available than the previous season.

According to Gehan El Sherif, export specialist for fresh produce exporter El Rawan, the Egyptian sweet potato season is having a bit of a slower start, as the American sweet potato season hasn’t ended just yet: “The Egyptian season for sweet potatoes has only just started from the 1st of July. There aren’t a lot of orders at the moment, as there are still some arrivals from the American sweet potatoes. As the season goes on, I expect orders to increase as well. At this time, prices have been reasonable so far and we’re expecting prices to go even lower after the 20th of July. Prices are similar now to the previous season, but could become higher around October.”

El Sherif states that the volumes are expected to be higher than they were in the 2020 season. “The volume of this season’s harvest is higher than it was last year, I’d say it’s about 20% to 30% higher, so we expect to see that increase in our export numbers as well. The higher volume is good, as we’ve received a lot of requests for once the Honduras sweet potatoes are done for the year, which is expected to be around the 20th of July.”

“Our main markets are mostly found in Europe. We export large volumes to countries like Hungary, Romania, the Netherlands, the UK, Italy, France and Poland. We also have some new markets in our sight that we’d like to start exporting to this season as well. We’re ready for the busy parts of the sweet potato season!”
