40% of the banana plantations in the states of Zulia, Merida, Tachira, and Trujillo are currently affected by the lack of gasoline and by natural phenomena.
The president of the Foundation for the improvement of Banana in Venezuela (Fumplaven), Betty Pineda, spoke about the importance of this sector, which contributes more than 60% of the item.
Pineda said that the development of the sector has faced various issues that have affected fruit production, such as poor assistance, climate change, and heavy rainfall in recent months.
She also said that the sector had been affected by floods and a lack of fuel. The Foundation has taken steps so producers can buy some fuel but it is not enough to meet their transfer needs or for their bilge pumps, among other machinery.
