Hans Maagendans, Banafood, Germany:

"Staycations and pricey summer fruit boosts banana sales"

Banana sales aren't bad at the moment. That's according to Hans Maagendans of the German ripener, Banafood. "It's not so hot yet, which benefits banana sales. And, other summer fruit supplies are limited and relatively expensive."

"I also think fewer Dutch people will go away on vacation. That could boost summer banana sales. We usually sell about 20% less in the summer. Add ten percent, and you're talking about a nice volume. But, it won't be as extreme as last year."

Hans says there's a reasonably regular supply of the well-known brands. "In Ecuador, spot market prices are somewhat low, apparently due to surpluses. In two or three weeks, this could cause a bit of pressure on the market," he concludes.
