Intermarché and Netto support French peach and nectarine producers

After supporting apricot producers who were victims of the frost, Intermarché and Netto are reiterating their commitment to fruit growers by proposing, this time, the “Peaches and Nectarines in Solidarity”.

According to the PDO Peaches and Apricots of France, the 2021 French peach production should be reduced by approximately 35%. As for the apricots, a vast majority of the peaches and nectarines spared by the frost present defects in their appearance. In this context and in order to avoid losses, Intermarché and Netto are getting mobilized by buying from several partner producers their peaches and nectarines that are less aesthetically appealing but just as tasty.

The peaches and nectarines are less beautiful but just as tasty
The peach and nectarine season is starting and fruit growers are worried they will not sell all their production because the frost has damaged a large part of it. In order to support the sector, Intermarché and Netto are getting mobilized by buying from several French partner producers their peaches and nectarines that present some defects in their appearance in order to offer them the necessary outlets to sell their stocks. These fruits will be sold at attractive prices in all Intermarché and Netto stores in France, in special trays mentioning the solidarity approach. For this operation, the food stores of the group Les Mousquetaires plan to buy 550 tons of peaches and 1,000 tons of nectarines damaged by the frost.

Renewal of contract for 3 years
In parallel and in order to give visibility to our partner producers who were victims of the frost, Intermarché and Netto are already anticipating by proposing, for those who wish, the renewal of their contracts for 3 years. “It is essential that retail stores like Intermarché and Netto side with French producers in times of crisis. With such concrete initiatives, we want to accompany them and help them overcome this difficult period. It is our role as a distributor. Some sectors are in great distress, especially for fruit growers. With these operations, the goal is to offer them the necessary outlets to sell part of their productions. The operation “Apricots in Solidarity” is a huge success in stores. We therefore decided to renew this action for peaches and nectarines,” explains Stéphane de Fontenay, business manager Intermarché in charge of agricultural relations.
