During a technical day held in the Ferrara province on June 16th, 2021, there was a discussion about the wide varietal choice available when it comes to cherries and how each variety has its own characteristics. "The perfect variety does not exist, even though varietal innovation is doing a lot for the sector. Many variables come into play - from rootstocks to the type of growing technique, agronomics and the area where the orchard is located."
"2021 was characterized by frost, which caused a noticeable lack of produce. Temperatures dropped to -4.5°C for several hours one night and the earlier varieties were affected. At the same time, average Brix levels are also lower than 2020," explained Zanzi.
For further information about the single varieties, contact Vivai F.lli Zanzi directly, however it must be borne in mind that rootstocks have a considerable effect on the variety and therefore yields, and so does the condition of the soil.
"There are a few very interesting selections such as 116-08 and another two of German origin, which are particularly rustic and have shown a resistance to low temperatures."
